Developmental Educators in Adelaide and South Australia
Disability SA’s Developmental Educators are university-qualified allied health professionals with a Bachelor of Disability and Developmental Education (B.BDDE). Our Developmental Educators are registered with Developmental Educators Australia (DEA), the self-regulated professional body for Developmental Educators in Australia, and practise in accordance with DEA professional standards, scope of practice and Code of Ethics. They provide individualised, strengths-based support for people across South Australia. Our practice is informed by neuro-affirming and trauma-informed principles and focuses on the person’s strengths, goals, environments and everyday participation.
What is a Developmental Educator?
A Developmental Educator is a university-qualified allied health professional specialising in disability and Developmental Education. Developmental Educators work with people with disability to build functional capacity, independence, social inclusion and quality of life. Support is practical and person-centred, with strategies designed around the individual rather than a one-size-fits-all program.

Developmental Education and the NDIS

Developmental Educator or Occupational Therapist?
Developmental Educators and Occupational Therapists can both support independence and participation, but bring different professional perspectives. Disability SA can help families and participants understand which discipline, or combination of disciplines, best matches the support being sought.
Assessments and reports
Our Developmental Educators can contribute to assessment and reporting pathways, including Functional Capacity Assessments and sensory profiles where appropriate. Our approach aims to describe strengths and support needs clearly and provide practical recommendations.
