Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA)

Comprehensive evidence based assessments by Developmental Educators and Occupational Therapists.

Functional Capacity Assessments in Adelaide and South Australia

Disability SA provides comprehensive Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs) through university-qualified allied health professionals, including Developmental Educators and Occupational Therapists. Our Developmental Educators hold a Bachelor of Disability and Developmental Education (B.BDDE). Developmental Educators delivering these services are registered with Developmental Educators Australia (DEA) and practise within the profession’s standards and scope of practice. An FCA builds a clear picture of a person’s functional abilities, strengths, support needs and participation across everyday life.

What does an FCA consider?

  • Everyday activities and functional capacity
  • Independence and support needs
  • Participation at home, in education, work and community settings
  • Environmental factors that may help or create barriers
  • Safety, wellbeing and meaningful individual goals

Our assessment approach

Our assessments are evidence-informed, strengths-based and neuro-affirming. We consider the person in the context of their environments, experiences, communication preferences and individual needs rather than focusing only on deficits.

FCA reports and recommendations

The assessment is used to develop clear recommendations that can support planning and decision making. Recommendations are linked to the person’s functional needs, goals and opportunities to build independence and participation.

FCA and sensory profiles

Where sensory processing is relevant, a sensory profile may provide additional insight into how a person experiences and responds to sensory information. Disability SA also offers sensory profiles as a dedicated assessment pathway.
